wow... thats really not so funny or cool... specifically in reference to the ableist reference that really offended me.

i've supported and continue to support many individuals with developmental disabilities in their educational interests (aswell as in other ways), and they have done quite well in mathematics aswell as other subject areas.

maybe something to think about is how certain 'jokes' can be quite oppressive, and can counter act the struggles that some people with disabilities face on a daily basis.

i know personally i am really suprised to see this content matter on this specific tribe... its not what i thought this was all about.

i am open to further conversations about this matter on a one on one basis (if you feel more comfortable interacting that way), and you would like to try to understand my experience or perspective.

    ... shawnb.

hi! actually, i think i'm the one who made up this joke. i'm her friend in the "real world" (non internet land). here's my thoughts on it.

well i definately see your point and i actually agree with you!! but i also agree with that the retarrrrrrrded joke is very hillarious!! sometimes things are funny and sad at the same time. in fact, sometimes things are funny BECUASE they are sad. like have you seen that ali g episode where he sings that "throw the jew in the well" song in the country club and all the hick christian audience sings along and claps their hands. wow, i laughed my ass off ... but at the same time i knew it was tragic and was very disturbed. in fact it was funny BECAUSE it's tragic and absurd and shocking that people in this day and age would be so happy to sing along with this overtly racist, genocidal song. (you would expect any decent human being to boo him off the stage, but no...)

but other people who see that ali g episode might also think it's funny, but not for the same reason that i do. they might laugh their ass off just because they agree with the racist things he's saying about jews. and if i was in a room full of people watching that episode, and everyone else was laughing, i might be a little suspicious and think, "hmm .. i wonder WHY they're laughing?" and i would probably be tempted to give them a lecture similar to the lecture you gave my friend.

see, since i know jocelyn, i know that when she laughs at that joke, she's not laughing at intellectually disabled people, she's laughing at the fact that this pirate father is such an asshole to his poor son .. which is sad, but also hillarious .. as the line between humor and tragedy is often so thin. i think it's one way that humans have adapted to our rather tragic existence on this planet .. i really believe humor is a survival technique. if you think about it you will notice that are considered hillarious are also very serious and disturbing. so i think we evolved to developed a sense of humor to help us cope with life's pain.

but, since you don't know jocelyn, you don't realize why she thinks this joke is funny.

it's a tricky thing with jokes like this one or the ali g one, because although they can be very funny, people have to watch who they share them with. unless the person knows me and what i'm about, they are likely to INTERPRET these types of jokes as being sincerely bigoted, even if that was not my intention. if they're ignorant (as many people tend to be) they will laugh at the bigotry of it and really enjoy the joke -- but for all the wrong reasons. and when they hear this joke being made it legitimizes and reinforces their bigotry. but, if they're a compassionate and rather enlightened person like you are, they'll just think the joke is very inappropriate.

so, me, i only share these types of jokes with close friends who i can trust to know my intentions, and who i can trust to laugh for the right reasons.

well, shawnb, i admire you for having the courage to speak up about this, as i know this kind of thing isn't easy. thank you for your compassion. i can assure you that both me and jocelyn see nothing funny about intellectual dissabilities IN AND OF THEMSELVES, nor do we find anything funny about the stigma and scorn put on their shoulders by an ignorant society.

be sure to say if you disagree.

How come ShawnB and most everyone over reacts to everything these days? Its like this obsession with political correctness is nuetering the english language. Besides anyone knows that real retarded people wudnt be reading this anyway. And if they did theyd probably laff louder than anyone. If this preoccupation with political correctness gets any worse we'll all sound like Data without the emotion chip.

Call me retarded, but I am having a hard time understanding how "this obsession with political correctness is neutering (?) the English language"?
How can you neuter a language? The Webster dictionary has how many thousands of words in it? So asking people to be conscientious about their choice of words some how neuters it? Retard came from the French word retarder, and before that, the Latin word retardare. And so using the term mentally challenged some how neuters the English language.
Please explain this to me. Actually, you may have to spell it out for me real good like, as it may be that I am slow.
It seems to be an over used cliche and a capitalist tool to shame a person by calling them "politically correct" whenever they ask a person to take a minute to think about the words they use. For some reason that seems to shut them up, although I have no idea why.
I am not politically correct. One of my favorite movies by John Waters (Female Trouble) has a scene that I think is the funniest I ever saw in movies. I like the word retarded, and I use it in the proper sense of the dictionary. Not as an insensitive slur toward the mentally challenged or some one with Down Syndrome.
What other un-"PC" words neuter the English language? And even more, are they being used according to their proper definitions?
Another note to make is that Spanish has at least 3 ways of saying THE: el, la and los. One masculine, and one is feminine, and French has an equivalent. English just has THE. Talked about neutered when you get down to it.
One more question for now: what is so sacred about any language, English or any other.
To quote Ian Mackaye (of Minor Threat and Fugazi): When was it "politically correct" to show that you care?

Ok. Neutering the english language wasnt a great choice. How about "neutering common everyday speech and internet chat"? That be better? Who wants to go thru life screening everybody he comes in contact with to make sure he isnt going to accidentally offend them by something he said? Not me. We're becoming a country of thin skinned pussies. Soon speech will really be easy. Every other word will be "bleep".

              Interesting...
Do you really feel that way?

I only use the word pussy when I am trying to be obnoxious, like quoting Margaret Cho, Kathleen Turner or neandrethal (did I spell that right?) jocks and mulletheads.
People using words like retard and pussy doesn't offend me. However, I have little difficulty in thinking about what I say. If I say something that offends others, at least I know that I was conscious of what I was saying, rather than parrot the dudebrahs, scum fucks and hipsters around me. I guess I am fortunate to live in Portland, and mostly hang out with hardcore punks and anarchists. Some how we don't feel like "WE are being SOOOOO oppressed and policed by political correctness".

But, whatever. Say what you want. It doesn't really affect me personally.

I wouldn't talk about the details of man on man anal sex in front of a 9 year old; I can just as easily refrain from racial slurs, sexist remarks, and derogatory epithets from every day speech. It is too bad that MOST people are obsessed with the need to be politically INcorrect. "Take all my rights away- just let me say beeyotch out loud in public!"
Actually, most "politically correct" people are just as racist, sexist, homophobic, classist and ableist as rednecks, gangsters and juggalos they criticize, in action and attitude. Most tools of capitalist oppression don't use offensive language at all, but they are the first to dial 911 when they see a black man in upscale neighborhood and insist that women act in a manner consistent within the heterosexist christian paradigm.

That said, I'm still waiting for a pirate joke that is funny, I don't care how offensive it is.
